Guide: Access Control · approx. 6 min read
Ten years ago, controlling who could open a gate meant keypads, fobs and a drawer full of spare remotes. Today most of the gates we install are controlled by a small GSM or Wi-Fi controller wired into the gate motor. Users open the gate from their phone, and the site owner manages access from an app or web portal.
We supply and install the PAL Electronics range, and we fit it on our own jobs. This guide explains how it works and how to choose the right unit.
How it works
A controller such as the PAL Spider sits in or beside the gate's control panel and switches the "open" input on the motor, the same as a push button would. It connects to the outside world over the mobile network (with a SIM card) or Wi-Fi. Authorised users can then open the gate by:
- The PalGate app: tap to open, or open automatically by proximity as you approach.
- Dialling the gate: the unit recognises the caller ID, opens the gate and rejects the call, so the call is free.
- Voice assistant: Siri or Google Assistant.
- Smart remote controls: encrypted, uncloneable remotes, up to 4,000 per system.
- External devices: keypads, card readers or ANPR cameras via Wiegand, on the Wiegand model.
Everything is managed from the app or a web interface. You can add and remove users, set time windows, view the log of who opened the gate, and import or export user lists in Excel.
Why it beats traditional fobs and remotes
- Lost remote? Delete that one remote from the portal, with no reprogramming and no site visit.
- Time-limited access for contractors, cleaners, seasonal workers or holiday guests, by hour, day or date.
- A full event log showing who opened the gate and when.
- Remote management: let a delivery in from anywhere in the world.
- No cloning: PAL smart remotes use 128-bit encryption and a unique ID per remote.
Which controller do I need?
| Controller | Connection | App users | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spider i-WR GSM | 3G/4G + Wi-Fi | Unlimited | The all-rounder for most residential, commercial and rural gates, with smart remote and vehicle detector support |
| Spider Wiegand GSM | 4G + Wi-Fi | Unlimited | Sites that also need a keypad, card or fob reader or ANPR camera (Wiegand 26 input) |
| WiBee | Wi-Fi | 5 included (upgradable) | Homes and small sites with good Wi-Fi at the gate, and a lower-cost entry point |
All three run on 12–24 VDC, so they power directly from most gate control boards, including off-grid solar systems.
Add-ons worth specifying
- Smart remote controls: up to 100 m range, individually managed, and one remote can work several systems.
- VD 900 bolt-down vehicle detector: wireless free-exit sensor that opens the gate as a vehicle approaches from inside. No loop cutting, a battery life of around 7 years, and it pairs with WR-series controllers.
- 4G GSM intercoms: for visitors. The intercom calls your phone and you open the gate remotely.
Installer tips from our own jobs
- Check signal at the gate, not at the house. Test with a phone on the same network as your SIM at the exact controller position. An external antenna solves most weak-signal sites.
- Use a data SIM with a sensible allowance. App opening and notifications use small amounts of data.
- Set up the owner account before you leave site, and show the customer how to add users. It saves a return visit.
- Set proximity opening distances carefully on sites where users park or walk near the gate.
