Perimeter Security for Warehouses and Logistics Sites: A Buyer's Checklist

Site Specification — Industrial · 8 min read

Perimeter security on a warehouse or logistics site isn't really a security decision — it's an operational and financial one. A weak entrance point sits at the intersection of stock loss, vehicle theft, insurance compliance, and site downtime. This checklist covers what's actually worth specifying before you get a quote, so the conversation starts from the right questions.

Why this matters more than it might seem

A single unsecured or poorly specified entrance can undermine everything else spent on a site's security. Stock held in a warehouse often represents a large share of a site's insured value, and insurers increasingly ask specific questions about perimeter standards before confirming cover — a gate that doesn't meet the expected spec can affect a claim, not just deter opportunists.

The checklist

01. Vehicle traffic volume How many vehicle movements happen through the entrance daily? High-frequency sites (multiple HGV movements per hour) usually justify a cantilever sliding gate over a swing gate — less wear, faster cycle time, no ground track to jam under constant use.

02. Security rating, not just gate type Ask for a rated product, not just "a strong gate." LPS 1175 provides a certified, independently tested rating system — knowing what tier a site actually needs (based on the value at risk and the realistic threat level) should come before choosing a product, not after.

03. Automation vs manual operation Automated gates suit sites with continuous vehicle flow or limited staff at the entrance. Manual gates can be perfectly adequate for low-traffic secondary entrances — don't pay for automation a site doesn't need.

04. Fencing continuity either side A well-specified gate next to a weak or low fence line just moves the point of entry a few metres sideways. Perimeter fencing height, mesh gauge and continuity should match the gate's security tier, not be an afterthought.

05. Access control for who's coming through Staff, regular delivery drivers, and one-off visitors typically need different access methods — fobs or ANPR for known regular traffic, intercom or keypad for ad-hoc access. Specifying this alongside the gate avoids a bolt-on solution later.

06. Lighting and sightlines A gate is only as effective as what a driver, guard, or camera can actually see at night. Entrance lighting and clear sightlines are a cheap addition worth specifying alongside the gate itself, not a separate project.

07. Documentation ready before sign-off CE declarations, steel gauge, corrosion protection class, and security rating should be available on request, not chased after the order's placed. If a supplier can't produce this before you've committed, that's worth noticing.

08. Check with your insurer, not just your supplier Some commercial insurance policies specify minimum perimeter security standards as a condition of cover. Confirming this with your broker before finalising a spec avoids finding out after a claim that the gate didn't meet the policy's requirement.

The pattern worth noticing: almost every point on this list is really about avoiding a decision made in isolation — a gate chosen without reference to fencing, traffic, access control, or insurance requirements around it. A proper site spec covers all of it together, not just the gate in isolation.

What a documented spec should give you

Before committing to a supplier, you should be able to see — on paper — the gate type and rationale, the security rating it's tested to, steel gauge and finish, corrosion warranty, automation details if applicable, and how it integrates with the site's existing fencing and access control. If a quote arrives without most of this, it's worth asking for it before signing off.
