Guide: Off-Grid Power · approx. 5 min read
The entrances that most need a gate are often the ones furthest from a power supply: a farm track half a mile from the yard, a nature reserve car park, a compound on the edge of an estate, a field let for dog walking. Running mains power out to them means trenching, cable, a qualified electrician and sometimes a grid connection. It can easily cost more than the gate itself.
Solar-powered automation removes that cost. This guide explains how it works and when it's the right call.
How a solar gate system works
An off-grid gate system has four parts:
- Solar panel: generates power during daylight. Our EstateGuard Solar PowerBox uses a 430W panel, sized so the system keeps working through UK winters rather than just summer.
- Battery storage: two 125Ah deep-cycle batteries as standard store the energy and run the gate at night and through dull spells.
- Low-voltage gate motor and controls: the automation is specified to run efficiently from battery power.
- Housing and monitoring: everything sits in a durable galvanised steel PowerBox, with Bluetooth monitoring so you can check battery and charging status on your phone.
Add GSM access control and the whole entrance runs without a cable anywhere near it. Users open it from their phone, and you manage access remotely.
When solar makes sense
- No mains at the entrance, and the cost of bringing it there is significant.
- Protected or sensitive ground where trenching needs permission or would disturb the site, such as nature reserves, SSSIs and heritage parkland.
- Temporary or changing sites where the gate may move.
- Sites where running costs matter, with no electricity bill for the gate.
When to think carefully
- Very high traffic: an entrance opening hundreds of times a day may need a larger system, or mains. We size every system to the expected usage.
- Heavy shading: the panel needs a reasonable view of the southern sky. Trees and buildings matter more in winter when the sun is low.
- Power-hungry extras: a gate is fine, but continuous CCTV, lighting or heating on the same supply can outstrip what a panel and battery can reliably deliver in winter. These need separate consideration.
What we need to size a system
- Gate type and size (or the gate you're considering)
- Roughly how many openings per day
- Site location and any shading around the entrance
- What else, if anything, needs power: access control, intercom, lighting
A real example
In Lincolnshire, we fitted a solar-powered cantilever sliding gate to control access to a dog-walking field. Paying customers get booked access by phone, with no mains power anywhere near the entrance. See EstateGuard Solar.
